(USA Today) ESPN’s Samantha Steele said on Tuesday she is engaged to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder. The college football host confirmed the news to Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated. Steele and Ponder began dating earlier this year after meeting on the set of College Gameday. Ponder confirmed the pairing in October after being asked about it by a fan on Twitter.

The two have since tried to downplay their relationship in the press. “There’s been a thousand articles today about it,” Ponder said at the time. “You can’t really worry about it. You’ve got to try to keep it private, but that’s just part of the industry, part of the job. I don’t know. Comes with the territory.”

When it was suggested his relationship with Steele was affecting his play, Ponder brushed off the criticism. “She has nothing to do with it,” he said. “We’ve been dating since the beginning of the season, so she had also to do with the five wins. So it has really nothing to do with anything on the football field.”

Great timing Einstein. Ya just couldn’t wait 4 weeks til after the season to pop the question? (yes, I’ve already conceded to the fact that the chances of the Vikings making the playoffs are not good. You mean not good like 1 out of 100? I’d say more 1 out of a million. So you’re tellin me there’s a chance! YYYYEA!) The point is, when people started publicly questioning whether Ponder’s poor play was due to the fact that he was in a relationship with Sammy Slammin Steele, I immediately came to his defense saying it was preposterous and laughable that people would even bring something like that up. And now coming off one of the most pathetic performances of recent memory against the team’s biggest rival in a pivotal division match up, he decides the best way to respond to his critics is to go and get engaged. Listen, if Ponder wasn’t the sole reason keeping this team from succeeding, then I would probably care less. But the backlash that is sure to come is all on you now Sparky. In the NFL you have one job, and one job only. To win. When you’re playing like you have been playing the past 7 or so weeks, your social life can wait til the off season.

This is absolutely ridiculous- the recent photos of him look like he’s destined to be a disaster, not to mention probably a divorced disaster. Best one liner regarding this story should be put on a t shirt

Hi Clif! I wasn’t able to leave a comment on the blog this mnroing, so that’s why I haven’t left a comment on your FANTASTIC POST above this one. I’ve got to run for an hour or so and will. I heard that today on the news about Jackie Robinson and the GOP! Seems they can’t do nothing right, huh? As noted, the new GOP doesn’t even have any WHITE IDOLS for their cult members to worship on their new website. Bah hahahahahahahahaha! And the darker than pasty white idols they’ve chosen are people who would have hated their guts if alive today! Too funny! Okay, gotta run. BRB.
